The Chairman of the Kano Online Media Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, has urged journalists to uphold professional ethics, accuracy and responsible journalism in their coverage of the 2027 general elections.
Dangambo made the call on Thursday while commissioning the renovated office of M Kano TV Online Media at Kofar Mazugal in Kano metropolis.
The NUJ chairman, who was accompanied by members of the Chapel’s Executive Council, commended the Chief Executive Officer of M Kano TV, Musbahu Kano, for upgrading the organisation’s office to meet the standard of a modern media establishment.
He urged other online media practitioners to emulate the initiative, stressing that maintaining identifiable physical offices would enhance public confidence, credibility and accountability in the online media industry.
Dangambo also cautioned journalists against compromising their safety while covering political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
> “It is better to report alive than to be reported dead. Your safety is very important, especially as the 2027 election campaign has commenced,” he said.
He urged journalists to resist attempts by politicians and other individuals to manipulate them into publishing fake news, misleading information and defamatory materials.
According to him, efforts are also underway at the National Assembly to enact legislation requiring online media organisations to maintain identifiable physical addresses.
He said such legislation would help check the activities of fake journalists, strengthen accountability and curb the spread of misinformation and fabricated stories.
Dangambo further stressed the need for continuous training and capacity building among online journalists, saying this would promote professionalism and distinguish trained journalists from citizen journalists and social media influencers.
He also warned against sensational reporting, particularly in the coverage of banditry and other security-related issues.
The chairman urged journalists to give adequate and responsible attention to national security in their reports, noting that the media has an important role to play in promoting peace, public safety and national development.
Earlier, the CEO of M Kano TV, Musbahu Kano, said the renovation was undertaken to provide a more conducive working environment for staff and a welcoming atmosphere for guests and visitors.
He expressed appreciation to the Chapel’s Executive Council, particularly its chairman, for attending the commissioning ceremony.
Musbahu assured the Chapel and the public that M Kano TV would continue to operate in line with the ethics and principles of professional journalism.
