The Management of Kano State Polytechnic has appealed to the Kano State Ministry for Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation to facilitate government intervention in reviving several abandoned and deteriorating projects across the institution.
The appeal was made during an engagement meeting between the management of the Polytechnic and officials of the ministry, where the institution highlighted urgent infrastructure challenges affecting teaching, learning and administrative activities.
Speaking on behalf of the Rector, Dr Abubakar Umar Farouk, the Deputy Rector, Dr Maryam Kabir, commended the Kano State Government for its continued support to educational institutions but expressed concern over several abandoned projects.
She said some of the projects had remained incomplete for more than two decades despite their importance to the institution.
According to her, the projects include abandoned administrative blocks at the Central Administration, an unfinished 500-seat lecture theatre at the School of Management Studies, as well as repair and maintenance works at the School of Technology, students’ centres and other critical infrastructure.
Dr Maryam also called for comprehensive renovation of the Polytechnic’s Central Administration complex, noting that some facilities had become outdated and required urgent rehabilitation to meet modern standards.
“There is a joint project between the Kano State Government and the Polytechnic. We fulfilled our own obligations, but the government’s component of the project has remained suspended. This situation is affecting the realisation of the intended benefits,” she said.
The Registrar of the Polytechnic, Arch. Mukhtar Ibrahim Bello, said the institution had consistently included some of the abandoned projects in its annual budget proposals, but approvals were yet to be secured.
He urged the ministry, led by Commissioner Comrade Nura Ma’aji Sumaila, to strengthen collaboration with the institution and draw the attention of the state government to its infrastructure needs.
Bello said the ministry’s intervention and project monitoring mandate could play a significant role in ensuring that the abandoned projects were brought to the attention of the appropriate authorities and eventually completed.
Representing the Commissioner, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Engr. Abdulrazak Haruna, commended the Polytechnic management for its proactive approach towards addressing the infrastructure challenges.
He acknowledged the concerns raised and assured the institution of the ministry’s readiness to support efforts to present the issues before the appropriate authorities.
Haruna clarified that although the ministry was not directly responsible for awarding projects, it had the mandate to promote accountability, monitor project implementation and facilitate engagement with relevant government agencies.
He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving educational infrastructure and public service delivery across Kano State.
The meeting ended with both parties agreeing to strengthen collaboration towards finding sustainable solutions to the Polytechnic’s infrastructure challenges and creating a more conducive environment for teaching, learning and effective administration.
