The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the reported attack on its Sokoto State governorship candidate, Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, and members of his convoy near Sokoto Airport.
The party made its position known in a statement by its chieftain, AWT, who described the alleged incident of Oct. 30 as disturbing and unacceptable.
The statement alleged that personnel of the Sokoto Marshal and Sokoto State Community Guard blocked Dan’iya’s convoy, fired gunshots, damaged his vehicle and detained two Department of State Services (DSS) officers attached to his security detail.
The ADC called on the Nigeria Police Force, DSS and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough, independent and impartial investigation into the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable was brought to justice.
It stressed that every Nigerian had the right to freedom of movement, political association and participation in electoral processes without threats, violence or harassment.
The party urged political actors to resolve differences through peaceful and lawful means, saying security agencies must protect citizens irrespective of their political affiliations.
It also called on the Sokoto State Government to ensure that security outfits under its authority operated lawfully and impartially.
The statement, however, said the alleged attack would not deter the party from proceeding with its scheduled presidential campaign flag-off in Sokoto on Nov. 4.
It urged ADC members and supporters to remain calm, exercise restraint and uphold peaceful political engagement, while reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law and democratic participation.
The party maintained that all citizens must be allowed to participate in the democratic process freely and without fear.
