The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Kano State has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to intensify public sensitization on the dangers of drug abuse as part of efforts to curb the growing menace in the state.
The Kano State Coordinator of the NOA, Nura Liman, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Kano. He said the collaboration is aimed at educating the public, particularly youths, on the harmful effects of drug abuse and the need to avoid involvement in such activities.
According to him, investigations conducted by the agency have revealed that drug abuse is gradually gaining ground in the state, a development he described as worrisome and one that requires urgent collective action.
Liman explained that the agency is therefore stepping up its awareness campaigns across communities to enlighten residents on the health, social and economic consequences associated with drug abuse.
He further noted that many social vices and criminal offences in society are often linked to the involvement of young people in drug abuse, stressing that addressing the problem would also help reduce other forms of criminality.
The state coordinator also commended the efforts of the Kano State Government for establishing agencies aimed at tackling phone snatching, thuggery and other related crimes, saying such initiatives demonstrate the government’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the state.
Liman added that public sensitization remains a collective responsibility, calling on community leaders, parents, civil society groups and the media to support ongoing efforts in educating the public in order to achieve the state’s goal of reducing drug abuse and related crimes.
