Tragedy has struck in Kano State following the death of a woman, Hafsatu Yusuf, who gave birth to quintuplets at a state hospital, less than 24 hours after delivery. Authorities confirmed that the mother died from severe postpartum bleeding despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life.
Hafsatu Yusuf had earlier delivered five healthy babies—three boys and two girls—in what was initially described as a rare and remarkable medical achievement. The successful delivery had drawn widespread attention and celebration across the state before news of her death cast a shadow over the event.
Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Ministry of Health, Nabulusi Abubakar, said the medical team acted swiftly to manage complications arising after childbirth but were unable to prevent the fatal outcome. He noted that postpartum hemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality, particularly in high-risk deliveries such as multiple births.
Abubakar, however, reassured the public that the quintuplets are in stable condition and responding well to medical care under close supervision by healthcare professionals. He added that the babies are receiving the necessary attention to ensure their survival and healthy development.
The incident has sent shockwaves across Kano State, sparking renewed concerns over maternal health challenges and the risks associated with high-order multiple pregnancies. Health experts emphasize the need for improved access to advanced maternal care, early detection of complications, and adequate emergency response systems in healthcare facilities.
In response, the Kano State Government has expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and called on the public to offer prayers for the deceased. The government also pledged continued support for the newborns, assuring that necessary measures will be taken to cater for their welfare during this difficult period.
