Major opposition political parties in Nigeria have agreed to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a national summit of opposition parties held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where party leaders resolved to form a united front ahead of the polls.

According to the communiqué signed by chairmen of participating parties, the proposed candidate would be jointly agreed upon and supported by all opposition groups to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress and address the concerns of Nigerians.

The parties also expressed lack of confidence in the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Ojo Amupitan, alleging bias and partisanship in favour of the APC, and called for his exclusion from conducting the 2027 general elections.

In addition, the communiqué urged the National Assembly to review the Electoral Act 2026 to remove provisions considered detrimental to credible elections, while also calling on INEC to extend the deadline for party primaries to the end of July 2026.

The opposition parties further demanded the release of politicians allegedly detained or harassed over bailable offences, stressing the need to uphold their fundamental rights, and commended Nigerians for their resilience and support for efforts aimed at what they described as rescuing the country from state capture.
