Th/e Commissioner of Police in Kano, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has announced the launch of a specialized Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of renewed efforts to tackle violent crimes and enhance public safety in the state.
Speaking during the official inauguration, the police commissioner described the initiative as a major milestone in the command’s commitment to building safer and more secure communities.
He said the unit, established on April 24, 2026, was in line with directives from the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen intelligence-led policing and improve operational efficiency.
Bakori explained that the VCRU is a specialized, intelligence-driven tactical unit created to decisively address cases of armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes that threaten lives, property and economic activities across the state.
According to him, the unit is designed to respond swiftly to incidents of violent crime, prevent and control criminal activities through proactive deployments, and ensure thorough investigation and prosecution of offenders.
“Our goal is simple: to reduce response time, dominate public spaces and deny criminals the freedom to operate within Kano State,” he stated.
The commissioner emphasized that the unit is composed of carefully selected officers who have undergone rigorous screening and specialized training in tactical operations, intelligence handling, human rights and professional conduct in line with global best practices.
He stressed that discipline, integrity and respect for human rights would remain the guiding principles of the unit.
He further noted that the police command would take full responsibility for the conduct, performance and public image of the unit, adding that the initiative aligns with ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening intelligence-based policing and fostering stronger community partnerships.
Bakori disclosed that the VCRU would rely on real-time intelligence, data analysis and credible information from members of the public to carry out its operations effectively.
He called on residents to support security agencies by providing useful information that could aid crime prevention and detection.
To ensure transparency and accountability, the police command also inaugurated a Civilian Oversight Board for the unit.
The board comprises representatives of civil society organisations, traditional rulers, legal practitioners and community leaders, and is expected to strengthen public confidence and promote inclusive policing.
The launch ceremony was attended by senior police officers, community stakeholders and members of the public, who commended the initiative as a step in the right direction toward addressing security challenges in Kano State
