Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the constitution of a Special Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as part of efforts to combat substance abuse and drug-related crimes across the state.
A statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said the task force would be chaired by Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, the immediate past Executive Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, alongside representatives of security agencies, health institutions, traditional and religious bodies, and civil society organisations.
According to the statement, the committee is expected to provide a coordinated multi-agency framework to disrupt illicit drug networks, strengthen intelligence gathering and information sharing among security agencies, identify drug distribution centres, facilitate arrests and recommend the seizure of assets linked to drug trafficking activities.
The statement noted that the task force would also work towards ensuring speedy prosecution of drug-related offences through improved evidence gathering, standardised forensic procedures and collaboration with the judiciary, while leading advocacy campaigns targeting youths, students and other vulnerable groups to reduce drug demand and promote rehabilitation.
Yusuf described drug abuse as one of the greatest threats to the future of young people and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling the menace through enforcement, prevention and community participation.
He charged members of the task force to discharge their responsibilities with commitment, professionalism and patriotism in order to safeguard the future of Kano State.
