The Kano State Government has opened applications for the distribution of free tree seedlings under its 10 Million Trees Campaign, as part of efforts to combat climate change, restore degraded land and promote environmental sustainability across the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, announced the commencement of the application process, urging community groups, schools, institutions, faith-based organisations and other stakeholders to register and participate in the afforestation initiative.
According to the commissioner, successful applicants will receive free seedlings for planting within their communities, while beneficiaries will also be integrated into a digital monitoring system to track the growth and survival of the trees.
Hashim said the campaign is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to planting 10 million trees in 2026 as part of a broader target of 20 million trees by 2030 to mitigate the effects of climate change, improve biodiversity and create a healthier environment.
He explained that the seedlings include economic and environmental tree species such as moringa, baobab, neem, mango, lemon, sweet orange and locust bean, adding that residents are encouraged to take ownership of the initiative by nurturing the trees after planting.
The state government urged interested organisations and groups to submit their applications through the designated platform, expressing confidence that widespread participation would contribute significantly to environmental conservation and strengthen Kano’s resilience against the impacts of climate change.
