NSCDC Launches Campaign on Safety of Telecom Masts, Protection of Critical Infrastructure in Kano

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kano State Command, has launched a statewide public awareness campaign to educate residents on the safety of telecommunication masts during the rainy season and the need to safeguard critical telecommunications infrastructure.

The State Commandant of the corps, Mohammed Hassan Agalama, said at the flag-off of the campaign in Kano that the initiative was aimed at promoting public safety and preventing vandalism of telecommunications facilities across the state.

Agalama warned members of the public against tampering with telecommunication masts, underground cables, power installations and other telecommunications facilities, describing such acts as economic sabotage capable of endangering lives and disrupting essential services.

He noted that heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds during the rainy season could pose risks around telecommunication installations, advising residents to avoid taking shelter under masts during storms and to promptly report damaged or suspicious facilities to the nearest NSCDC office or other relevant authorities.

According to him, telecommunications infrastructure remains a critical national asset that supports communication, security operations, emergency response, banking services and other economic activities, stressing that protecting the facilities is a collective responsibility.

The commandant directed all 44 divisional officers in the state to take the awareness campaign to communities by engaging traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations, youth groups, schools, religious institutions and other stakeholders on the importance of protecting telecommunications infrastructure and observing safety precautions during adverse weather conditions.

He reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI), warning that anyone found vandalising or interfering with telecommunications facilities would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Agalama also appealed to members of the public to support the corps with credible and timely information to prevent vandalism and ensure uninterrupted telecommunications services across Kano State.

He added that the Department of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Protection of the Kano State Command, headed by DCC Victor Bala Muhd, had been tasked with coordinating and ensuring the successful implementation of the campaign across the state.
