NAPTIP Rescues 180 Children After Investigative Journalism Exposes Trafficking

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has rescued more than 180 children following an investigative journalism project that uncovered human trafficking activities carried out under the guise of civil society organisations.

The investigation, initiated by PREMIUM TIMES, has exposed the increasingly sophisticated methods being used by traffickers to gain access to vulnerable children and communities.

The development has raised concerns over the exploitation of the credibility enjoyed by genuine civil society organisations and humanitarian programmes by criminals seeking to disguise trafficking activities as charitable interventions.

Findings from the investigation showed how purported CSOs could be used to gain the trust of families and communities, creating access to vulnerable children.

The development has renewed calls for stronger scrutiny and verification of organisations involved in child protection, humanitarian intervention and community development, particularly those working directly with vulnerable populations.

However, stakeholders cautioned against using the development to discredit genuine CSOs, which remain important partners of government agencies and security organisations in protecting vulnerable persons and combating human trafficking.

They called on relevant authorities to identify and prosecute fraudulent organisations that exploit the cover of charity for criminal activities, while strengthening collaboration among investigative journalists, security agencies and genuine civil society groups to protect children and expose trafficking activities.
