Journalists and media workers in Kano have expressed grief over the death of Hajiya Hadiza, a well-known food vendor whose presence at the NUJ Press Centre became a familiar part of daily life for many media practitioners.
Hajiya Hadiza reportedly died on Monday after a brief illness, bringing to an end years of service to journalists, visitors and members of the public who patronised her food business. News of her passing quickly spread across the Press Centre and surrounding areas, drawing tributes from colleagues, friends and customers.
Many journalists described her as a hardworking and compassionate woman whose food stand served as a gathering point for reporters, editors and guests. They recalled that beyond providing meals, she created an atmosphere of friendship and hospitality that made the Press Centre feel like a second home to many.
Those who knew her also highlighted her contribution to women’s empowerment, noting that she provided employment and training opportunities to several young women, helping them acquire skills and earn a living. Her dedication to supporting others earned her respect across the media community and beyond.
Members of the NUJ Press Centre said Hajiya Hadiza would be remembered for her kindness, generosity and strong relationships with people from all backgrounds. They offered prayers for the repose of her soul and comfort for her family, while noting that her legacy would live on through the many lives she touched during her years of service.
