The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a social media user for allegedly spreading a viral post containing a false bandit threat that triggered panic among residents of Eket and surrounding communities.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said in a statement on Monday that the suspect, identified as Akaninyene Udo, popularly known online as “AK Philo,” was arrested following investigations into a post that read “Eket get ready for us,” accompanied by an image of an armed bandit.
According to her, the post caused widespread fear and anxiety among residents, prompting swift response from security operatives, who later confirmed that there was no imminent security threat in any part of Akwa Ibom State.
She added that investigations into the matter had been concluded and the suspect would be arraigned in court, while efforts were ongoing to identify others involved in creating or circulating the misleading content.
The police spokesperson warned residents against spreading unverified security information, fake news and alarmist messages capable of causing public panic, stressing that such actions constitute criminal offences under the law.
DSP John urged members of the public to always verify security-related information through official channels before sharing, noting that the Command remains committed to maintaining peace and security across the state.
She further encouraged citizens to remain calm, vigilant and supportive of security agencies by reporting suspicious activities through appropriate channels.
