Pupils and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending nearly two months in captivity, bringing relief to their families and the state.

The victims, comprising 39 pupils and six teachers, were kidnapped on May 15 when heavily armed gunmen attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School, L.A. Primary School and Community Grammar School in Yawota and Esiele communities. One teacher was killed during the attack.

The Presidency confirmed their rescue on Friday, saying security agencies carried out a coordinated operation that led to the successful release of all the captives. President Bola Tinubu described the operation as a major breakthrough, commending the military, intelligence agencies and other security personnel involved.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State welcomed the development, describing the victims’ release as a huge relief for their families and the entire nation. He also praised the resilience of the security agencies and reiterated the state’s commitment to supporting efforts to tackle insecurity.

The abduction had sparked widespread outrage and protests across Oyo State, with parents, community leaders and civil society organisations demanding the safe return of the victims. Their release ends more than 50 days of anxiety for the affected families and communities.

Security agencies have not disclosed the full details of the rescue operation but said efforts would continue to track down those responsible for the abduction and ensure they face justice.
