One construction worker has died while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries following the collapse of a section of the new Gombe State House of Assembly Complex under construction.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday when a cantilevered entrance canopy at the multi-billion-naira project gave way, trapping workers beneath the rubble before emergency responders rescued the victims.
The Gombe State Government, in a statement issued by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Ismaila Uba Misilli, said Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya had ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of the collapse.
The governor expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and directed that all injured workers receive comprehensive medical treatment at the government’s expense. He also assured residents that the findings of the investigation would guide appropriate actions in line with established safety standards.
The government said relevant authorities had secured the site while structural and safety experts commenced an assessment to determine the cause of the incident and prevent a recurrence.
The new Gombe State House of Assembly Complex is one of the state’s flagship infrastructure projects aimed at providing a modern legislative facility. Authorities pledged to ensure strict compliance with construction and safety regulations as the investigation progresses.
