Agency warns against poaching, tree felling in Falgore Game Reserve

‎The Kano State Zoological and Wildlife Management Agency (KAZOWMA) has warned against poaching, tree felling in Falgore Game Reserve.
‎
‎The Managing Director of KAZOWMA, Musayyib Kawu, made the call on Saturday during the 2026 World Rangers’ Day celebration held at Falgore Reserve in Doguwa Local Government Area of Kano State.
‎
‎The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of this year’s World Rangers’ Day is: “Guardians of a Changing Planet”.
‎
‎The managing director said: “Anyone found violating wildlife and environmental protection laws will face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.”
‎
‎Kawu underscored the need for collective action to protect the environment.
‎
‎He urged communities around the Falgore Game Reserve to protect the forest and wildlife from illegal activities.
‎
‎The managing director observed that illegal hunting, poaching, indiscriminate tree felling, bush burning, and other activities degrade the reserve.
‎
‎Kawu commended rangers for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting the reserve and condoled with the families of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
‎
‎He also pledged to improve the welfare of the agency’s workforce, particularly casual staff at the reserve, and work towards providing permanent and pensionable employment for deserving workers.
‎
‎In the same vein, Alhaji Ado Yakubu from Doguwa/Tudun Wada Constituency urged residents of communities surrounding the reserve to actively participate in safeguarding and protecting the forest.
‎
‎He urged the community to stop illegal hunting, the killing of wildlife, and indiscriminate tree felling.
‎
‎On his part, the Director of Zoo Services, Hajiya Hafsat Bello, encouraged the public to plant more trees and avoid indiscriminate tree felling.
‎
‎She said trees play a critical role in combating climate change, preventing erosion, and maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
‎
‎Bello further explained that this year’s celebration marks the 20th anniversary of World Rangers Day, making it significant in recognising the contributions and sacrifices of rangers around the world.
