Pensioners Urge States to Implement New Minimum Pension Scheme

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has called on state governments across the country to implement the new minimum pension scheme to improve the welfare of senior citizens.

The North-West Zonal Vice Chairman of the union, Comrade Salisu Ahmad Gwale, made the call while briefing journalists shortly after the North-West zonal stakeholders’ meeting held in Kano.

Gwale commended the efforts of some North-West state governments in settling outstanding pension liabilities, describing the development as a positive step towards improving the welfare of retirees.

He, however, stressed the need for all state governments in the North-West and across the country to implement the new minimum pension, in line with the policy already adopted by the Federal Government.

The zonal vice chairman particularly praised the Zamfara State Government for implementing the minimum pension of ₦32,000 as approved by the Federal Government, and urged other state governments to emulate the gesture.

He also commended Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for settling over ₦32 billion in outstanding pension liabilities, noting that the move had brought relief to many retirees in the state.

The North-West zonal stakeholders’ meeting was attended by members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners from the seven states in the North-West geopolitical zone.
