PRP-Vanguard Raises Concerns Over 2027 Elections, Calls for United Leftist Front

The PRP-Vanguard Collective has expressed concern over the political climate ahead of the 2027 General Elections, alleging that the current administration is determined to retain power through undemocratic means while shrinking the democratic space for opposition parties.

In a discussion paper issued on Sunday and signed by the PRP-Vanguard Collective at its national headquarters, the group claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had entrenched what it described as a dominant party system by allegedly using intimidation, political pressure and internal divisions to weaken opposition parties.

The group also alleged that leftist political organisations, particularly the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), had been deliberately targeted through infiltration and leadership disputes aimed at undermining their ideological influence and political relevance.

According to the statement, the lingering leadership crisis within the PRP is part of a broader effort to weaken the country’s leftist movement, while the delay in the registration of the Movement of the People (MOP) was described as an attempt to exclude what it called “authentic socialist voices” from participating in future elections.

The PRP-Vanguard said its immediate priorities were to reclaim the PRP from what it described as “bourgeois interests” and to pursue the registration of the MOP through legal means, including ongoing court proceedings, while mobilising public support through town hall meetings, public lectures, youth engagement and grassroots campaigns.

The group further expressed fears that the 2027 General Elections could be undermined through security challenges, logistical delays or other circumstances capable of disrupting the electoral process, and called on Nigerians to remain vigilant in defence of democratic governance.

It also urged left-leaning political groups and activists to put aside ideological and organisational differences and establish a united front capable of providing what it described as a credible alternative to the country’s mainstream political parties.

The collective emphasised the need to strengthen grassroots structures across the country, deepen engagement with workers and local communities, and build sustainable organisational capacity beyond electoral cycles.

It maintained that the struggle for social and political change required long-term planning, ideological commitment and increased mobilisation of resources, adding that the objective was to place socialist ideas firmly on Nigeria’s political agenda in 2027 and beyond.

The statement concluded by describing the discussion paper as a contribution to ongoing debates within the Nigerian left and an invitation for constructive criticism aimed at strengthening progressive political organisations in the country.
