Kano Govt to Expand Water Distribution Within One Week

The Kano State Government says it will commence expanded distribution of potable water to communities across the state within the next week, following progress in the rehabilitation of major treatment plants, reservoirs and regional water schemes.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, disclosed this in an interview with Freedom Radio in Kano.

Hashim said major facilities, including the Challawa Water Treatment Plant, Tamburawa and Goron Dutse reservoirs, as well as several regional water schemes that had remained dormant for years, were nearing full operational readiness.

He said the Challawa plant was designed to supply about 51 per cent of the water demand of Greater Kano, adding that trial testing and broader distribution would commence once the ongoing rehabilitation works were completed.

According to him, the rehabilitation includes restoration of transmission lines, including the critical 15.6-kilometre line to Goron Dutse, desilting and rehabilitation of reservoirs with a combined capacity of more than 40 million litres, and repairs to pumps and filtration units.

The commissioner said nine of the state’s 19 regional water schemes were currently undergoing restoration, with some already producing water after years of inactivity.

Hashim said the interventions were part of the state government’s strategy to address the daily water supply deficit estimated at more than 300 million litres in Greater Kano, while tackling challenges associated with power supply, equipment and infrastructure.

He also called on residents to protect water infrastructure from vandalism and illegal connections to ensure sustainable water supply.

The commissioner said the government was also strengthening waste management partnerships, providing protective equipment for sanitation workers and collaborating with stakeholders to promote cleaner and more resilient communities.

He urged residents to safeguard water facilities and report illegal activities, assuring that further updates on distribution schedules for individual communities would be provided after trial testing and commencement of full operations.
