The Kano State Youth for Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria has urged Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf to appoint Alhaji Lawan Badamasi as the substantive Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).

The group’s Chairman, Ibrahim Ismail, made the appeal in a statement following the resignation of Prof. Sani Lawan Malumfashi, who was recently appointed as the state’s Commissioner for Higher Education.

Ismail said Badamasi, who currently serves as KANSIEC Commissioner for Media and Publicity, should be considered for the position in view of his experience and familiarity with the commission’s operations.

He said appointing Badamasi would promote administrative continuity and ensure a smooth transition in the leadership of the electoral body.

According to him, continuity is essential for the commission to effectively discharge its statutory responsibilities, particularly the organisation, conduct and supervision of local government elections across the 44 local government areas of the state.

The group stressed that the position requires a high level of transparency, impartiality and accountability to safeguard the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.

It noted that appointing an individual familiar with the commission’s internal operations would minimise administrative disruptions and sustain ongoing institutional activities.

The organisation also urged the governor to ensure that the appointment process complies with relevant constitutional and statutory provisions governing the establishment and operations of the state electoral commission.

It emphasised that the independence of KANSIEC must remain a priority, noting that public confidence in democratic institutions depends on their ability to discharge their responsibilities without undue interference.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democratic values, youth participation, accountability, good governance and credible electoral processes in Kano State.

It urged the state government to give its recommendation due consideration in the interest of institutional stability and the development of democracy at the grassroots.
