For Hamza Isa Buffa, a physically challenged graduate of Microbiology from Kano State, disability has never been a barrier to achieving his dreams.

His life journey is a testament to resilience, determination and the power of opportunity, demonstrating that physical challenges do not define a person’s abilities or limit their potential.

“Disability is not inability,” Buffa said, reflecting on his experiences and the opportunities that have shaped his life.

Speaking at a media workshop organised by Sightsavers for journalists from the North-West zone in Kano, Buffa shared how education, skills acquisition and institutional support had helped him overcome challenges and pursue his aspirations.

The workshop, themed “Strengthening Media Partnership for Inclusive and Impactful Storytelling,” provided a platform for discussions on disability inclusion and the role of the media in promoting the rights, abilities and achievements of persons with disabilities.

Buffa expressed gratitude to Sightsavers for its support, particularly for sponsoring him to attend an IT Bridge course in Kano several years ago.

He said the training marked a turning point in his life, exposing him to new opportunities and equipping him with skills that broadened his horizons.

According to him, the knowledge and experience acquired through the programme have enabled him to participate in numerous training sessions and workshops, including opportunities to travel to different parts of the world.

“The support I received from Sightsavers opened many doors for me. The skills I acquired have given me opportunities to attend trainings and workshops across the world,” he said.

An indigene of Kano, Buffa explained that he was born without any physical disability but became physically challenged at the age of three.

Despite the challenges associated with his condition, he remained committed to education and personal development, eventually graduating with a degree in Microbiology.

His story underscores the importance of access to education, vocational training and inclusive opportunities in empowering persons with disabilities to contribute meaningfully to society.

Buffa urged persons with disabilities not to give up on their educational aspirations, stressing that formal education and skills acquisition remain essential tools for personal growth and independence.

He encouraged them to pursue their ambitions with confidence and determination, while taking advantage of opportunities provided by organisations supporting disability inclusion.

He also called on relevant organisations, including non-governmental organisations such as Sightsavers, to sustain their support for persons with disabilities, noting that such interventions could help many achieve their dreams.

Buffa’s journey offers a compelling reminder that when individuals are given the right support and opportunities, physical disability does not have to stand in the way of achievement.

Through his experiences, he continues to inspire others to look beyond physical limitations and recognise the abilities, aspirations and contributions of persons with disabilities.
