Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State says banditry must be defeated collectively across the affected northern states before the end of their tenure in 2023.
The governor who gave the assurance while signing the state’s 2022 approved appropriation on Wednesday in Katsina said no going back in fighting the bandits.
According to him, the bandits are well known in their Communities, therefore, there is no way a criminal can hold weapons, but people cannot keep to defend themselves.
He added that, “We must prepare to fight back as individuals, to fight the bandits because they are evils and they represent evil. We should not retreat in this fight.
“We took over under serious threat of security in 2015, and by God’s grace we will not handover this country to the next generation of leadership under this condition. We must restore normalcy.
“We inherited the government with the security challenges, and we must end it and hand over the state to our successors without the same problem. We must concur, control and dominate our environment.
“There are two advantages that we have, numbers and technology. When you put the two together, we will restore normalcy to our people. It is not beyond us to do that.”
According to Masari, the northwest and the entire north is facing some security challenges, especially banditry.
“Therefore, collectively we have the responsibility to reposition our state to face the challenges of today and tomorrow. This world is changing rapidly. And we must change with it or it will change without us.
“The northwest part of this country and indeed the whole country is facing a domestic banditry. Though we have some cases of cross border banditry.
“But essentially the banditry we are facing in Katsina, and by extension the northwest part of the country, is domestic, and perpetrated by people that are known to us.
“In fact, nothing divides us now except that they are bandits and we are not. So, collectively as a people, we must defeat them.
“But what is more important is that people must sit up, there should be no more cowardice in the fight against these evil men and women.
“They are evil and they represent evil, and for us as people, we should not shy away from our responsibility by pointing accusing fingers.
“Before you point accusing fingers, do the role that is expected of you, in this fight, there is no loss. The only loss in this fight is when you run away and refuse to fight. That is where the loss is.
“The only way to challenge these people is to show them that we are willing, determined and capable of defending our territory, our lives and property,” Masari said.
