Date Palm Plantation Project: Kano Secures 70 Hectares Under King Salman Humanitarian Initiative

Admin 1 month ago

The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has intensified efforts to secure land for the cultivation of one hundred hectares of date palm trees across the state, under the sponsorship of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre.

As part of the ongoing land search, the Ministry recently visited Makoda Local Government Area, where an additional 50 hectares were secured for the project.

This development adds to the 20 hectares earlier obtained at Kumbo in Gabasawa Local Government Area, bringing the total land secured so far to 70 hectares.

The inspection tour to Makoda was led by the Head of the Forestry Department in the Ministry, Malam Auwalu Muhammad.

He was accompanied by forestry experts drawn from various universities and private institutions, who assessed the suitability of the land for large-scale date palm cultivation. The team examined soil quality, water availability, and environmental sustainability factors critical to the success of the plantation.

According to the Ministry, the date palm plantation initiative is part of a broader programme supported by the Saudi-based humanitarian foundation to promote economic growth and strengthen food security, particularly in developing regions across Africa.

The project is expected to create employment opportunities, enhance agricultural productivity, and boost income generation for local communities.

With 70 hectares already secured, the Ministry is now focusing on acquiring the remaining 30 hectares required for full implementation of the 100-hectare project. Officials say efforts are ongoing to identify and secure suitable land to ensure Kano State maximizes the benefits of the initiative.

The Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry, Maryam Abdulqadir, in a statement issued on June 25, 2026, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the project.

She noted that once fully operational, the plantation scheme will significantly contribute to economic development and improve food security not only in the immediate project areas but across Kano State as a whole.
