Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda has formally launched the 2026 Fertilizer Sales and Distribution Programme at Malumfashi Local Government Area.
The launch marks another step in the administration’s commitment to strengthening agriculture, ensuring food security, and improving farmers’ livelihoods across Katsina State.
Governor Radda announced that fertilizer will be sold at a heavily subsidized rate of ₦25,000 per bag.
“From the very beginning of this administration, we made a clear commitment—that agriculture will remain a top priority, and that our farmers will continue to receive timely and meaningful support,” Governor Radda said.
He noted that the administration sustained last year’s effort to deliver fertilizer before the rainy season. This year, the programme has been strengthened further.
“We have gone further to strengthen and decentralize the distribution system to ensure that access is expanded and that every genuine farmer benefits directly,” the Governor said.
He also added that the distribution will take place across 6,652 polling units statewide. Funtua Zone will receive 60 bags per polling unit. Katsina Zone will receive 50 bags per polling unit. Daura Zone will receive 45 bags per polling unit. 10 large-scale farmers per ward will receive 10 bags each to support increased production.
Governor Radda emphasized that this structure eliminates middlemen and ensures fertilizer reaches farmers directly.
“This eliminates middlemen, reduces diversion, and ensures that fertilizer gets directly to those who need it most, the farmers,” the Governor said.
Governor Radda stressed that fertilizer alone cannot deliver agricultural transformation. The state has adopted a comprehensive approach to agricultural development.
The administration has supported farmers with hand-powered tillers to improve efficiency and reduce manual labour burden. Tractors and modern implements have been deployed across the state to expand cultivation and boost productivity.
In irrigation farming, the state is currently drilling over 3,000 tube wells free of charge. This ensures farmers have reliable access to water for year-round agricultural production.
“Last year, the administration distributed 4,000 solar-powered water pumps. This year, an additional 4,000 gasoline-powered irrigation pumps have been provided free of charge across 361 wards, alongside liquid fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides,” the Governor disclosed.
He noted our government has procured six tube well drilling machines, three air compressors, one cutter suction dredger, and one amphibious swamp buggy excavator. These will be deployed for dredging and rehabilitating small earth dams to expand irrigation capacity.
Governor Radda has also approved procurement of improved seedlings to be made available to farmers at subsidized rates.
“We are also investing in the future of agriculture through our youths. Currently, 361 young men and women are undergoing training in modern farming, agro-processing, and agribusiness. They represent the next generation that will drive agricultural transformation in our State,” Governor Radda said.
Governor Radda urged farmers to use the provided inputs judiciously and for their intended purpose.
He encouraged youths to take advantage of agricultural opportunities, noting that the sector holds immense potential for wealth creation and self-reliance.
Earlier in his address Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture Hon Lawal Aliyu Shargalle, described agriculture under the leadership of Governor Radda as a “renewed engine of hope,” noting that no farming season has passed without direct fertilizer support to farmers since the inception of the administration.
He emphasized that the intervention is part of a broader agricultural revival strategy, highlighting key initiatives such as the provision of solar-powered water pumps for dry season farming, distribution of hand-powered tillers to ease manual labour, and deployment of tractors and implements to expand cultivation and boost productivity across the state’s three zones.
On transparency and accountability, he disclosed that the Ministry is working closely with the Community Development Programme (CDP) to ensure that the fertilizer reaches genuine farmers without diversion.
“This partnership guarantees transparency, accountability, and grassroots ownership of the process,” he explained, while commending the CDP team for their professionalism.
He further assured that strict monitoring mechanisms have been put in place, including tracking every bag of fertilizer and submitting weekly distribution reports to the Governor.
Shargalle praised Governor Radda’s leadership, stating that history will remember his administration for reviving the agricultural sector through courage, consistency, and collaboration.
In his remarks, Community Development Programme Coordinator Dr. Kamaludden Kabir commended Governor Radda’s agricultural investments over the years.
“His Excellency has, over the years, done tremendous work in improving the livelihoods and strengthening the rural economy of the state,” Dr. Kabir said.
He recalled that when he came on board, the Governor directed distribution of over 4,000 hand-powered tillers and more than 4,000 solar-powered irrigation pumps.
“With the introduction of these hand-powered tillers, the situation has improved considerably, making farming easier and more accessible for the common man,” Dr. Kabir said.
He acknowledged Katsina’s challenges from banditry, which led to loss of cattle traditionally used for farming. However, he noted that the Governor’s interventions have significantly improved the situation.
On his part, the Chairman of Malumfashi Local Government,
Hon. Muntari Abdullahi, commended the timely supply of agricultural products and the efforts made to ensure they are sold at affordable and accessible prices.
Hon. Abdullahi particularly praised the governor’s efforts in restoring peace, protecting lives and property.
We also acknowledge and thank His Excellency for the provision of employment opportunities in key sectors such as education and health. These interventions have created jobs for our youths and improved service delivery across the state.
“We are also grateful for the love and developmental attention shown by His Excellency to Malumfashi Local Government Area. The various projects and facilities provided have had a positive impact on the lives of our people,” the Chairman said.
