The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Sunday, April 19, 2026, as the first day of the Islamic month of Zulqida 1447AH.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Sultanate Council Sokoto and signed by the Chairman of its Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sambo Wali Junaidu.
The statement explained that the decision followed the non-sighting of the new crescent on Friday, April 17, 2026, corresponding to the 29th of Shawwal 1447AH, as no credible reports were received from across the country.
It noted that Saturday, April 18, 2026, would be observed as the 30th day of Shawwal, making Sunday, April 19, 2026, the first day of Zulqida in accordance with the Islamic calendar.
The Council further stated that the monthly moon sighting exercise plays a crucial role in determining the Islamic calendar, ensuring uniformity and wider acceptance of key religious periods among Muslims.
It added that the process also enhances the credibility of moon sightings, particularly for important months such as Ramadan and Zulqida, across the country.
The Sultan urged Muslims to continue observing the teachings of Islam and to pray for peace, unity, and progress in the nation.
