The Kano State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it remains united and formidable despite the recent defection of some members to the All Progressives Congress (APC), assuring supporters that the party remains committed to strengthening its structures and reclaiming political relevance in the state and across the country.
Speaking during a press briefing at the party’s state secretariat in Kano on Monday, the State Chairman of the PDP, Hon. Yusuf Ado Kibiya, said the departure of some stakeholders had not weakened the party’s resolve or cohesion.
He maintained that the PDP remained firmly rooted in its democratic principles and focused on providing a credible alternative platform capable of addressing the needs and aspirations of the people.
Kibiya noted that the party’s immediate priority was to consolidate its grassroots support base, strengthen internal unity and continue advocating policies that would improve the welfare of citizens.
According to him, the PDP remains committed to promoting good governance, democratic accountability and responsible leadership at all levels.
The chairman also commended party members for what he described as the peaceful and orderly conduct of recent party primaries, saying the exercise reflected the maturity and discipline of PDP members.
He said the transparent nature of the process demonstrated the party’s commitment to internal democracy and respect for due process, adding that such values would continue to guide its activities ahead of future political engagements.
On developments at the national level, Kibiya condemned the disruption and blockage of access to the venue designated for the PDP’s special national convention in Abuja, where party activities were scheduled to take place.
He described the incident as an affront to democratic principles, freedom of association and constitutional rights, stressing that political competition must be conducted within the confines of the law and democratic norms.
According to him, actions capable of hindering lawful political activities pose a threat to Nigeria’s democratic growth and could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.
He called on political actors, security agencies and relevant stakeholders to uphold the rule of law and guarantee an environment where political parties can freely conduct their affairs without intimidation or interference.
The Kano PDP chairman further disclosed that the state chapter had reviewed decisions taken by the party’s national leadership regarding the emergence of former President Goodluck Jonathan as the PDP presidential candidate.
He stated that while the decision was taken at the national level, the Kano chapter respects the constitutional processes that produced it and remains committed to supporting the party’s collective objectives.
Kibiya said the state chapter would continue to engage constructively with the national leadership and other stakeholders to advance the PDP’s mission and strengthen its position ahead of future elections.
He stressed that unity, consultation and adherence to party guidelines would remain central to the PDP’s strategy.
Addressing party members and residents of Kano State, the chairman assured that the PDP remained a credible and competitive political force with a proven record of public service and democratic resilience. He pledged that the party would continue to champion policies aimed at job creation, improved security, economic development and the provision of essential social services.
He also called on members to remain steadfast, disciplined and committed to the party’s ideals, emphasizing that collective efforts would be required to achieve the PDP’s vision for Kano State and Nigeria. Kibiya reiterated the party’s readiness to engage in dialogue with stakeholders across political divides in the interest of peace, fairness and sustainable development.
The briefing concluded with an appeal for unity among party faithful and renewed commitment to democratic values, as the PDP leadership in Kano expressed confidence that the party would continue to play a significant role in shaping the state’s political future.
