The Federal Government has rolled out 40 Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, buses, seven electric buses and more than 200 CNG-powered tricycles in Kano State as part of a push for cleaner, cheaper and more sustainable transport nationwide.
The deployment was announced by Ismaeel Ahmed, Executive Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, PCNGI, in a statement marking his first year in office. The statement was shared on his official Facebook page.
The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative is a core Federal Government programme aimed at cutting transport costs, reducing carbon emissions, and accelerating the shift to cleaner energy alternatives in Nigeria’s transport sector.
According to Ahmed, the Kano rollout flags off the Northern Corridor of the CNG and electric vehicle programme.
“We proudly launched the Northern Corridor of CNG and EV with the deployment of 40 CNG buses, seven electric buses and over 200 CNG-powered tricycles in Kano,” he said.
The PCNGI boss added that new Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, and Liquefied Compressed Natural Gas, LCNG, stations have been commissioned in Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Kaduna, Owerri and other cities to expand access to cleaner fuel.
Ahmed noted that the initiative has made significant strides nationwide over the past year.
Key milestones include a rise in the number of CNG-converted vehicles, the launch of the 100,000 Conversion Kit Programme, and the introduction of the “Convert Now, Pay Small Small” financing scheme designed to make vehicle conversion more affordable for owners.
On next steps, he said PCNGI will focus on scaling up CNG and EV infrastructure, expanding refuelling and charging networks, deploying additional mass transit vehicles, and attracting more private sector investment.
