Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State on Thursday flagged off the sale of 90,000 bags of subsidised fertiliser to farmers across the state, describing the initiative as part of his administration’s commitment to boosting agricultural production in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The fertiliser, transported in 150 trucks, is to be distributed across the state’s 44 local government areas and 484 political wards ahead of the peak of the 2026 wet farming season.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Kano, Yusuf said agriculture remains a major pillar of his administration’s development agenda, noting that the government had, over the past three years, implemented various interventions, including the provision of quality farm inputs, improved farming techniques and pest control measures to enhance food production.

According to the governor, the sustained supply of subsidised agricultural inputs has helped improve crop yields, reduced the cost of food, created employment opportunities in rural communities and strengthened food security across the state.

Yusuf disclosed that each of the 44 local government areas would receive an average of three truckloads of fertiliser for onward distribution to the 484 wards, with each ward allocated enough fertiliser for 70 genuine farmers.

He explained that while a bag of fertiliser currently sells for about ₦50,000 in the open market, the state government, in collaboration with the 44 local government councils, had subsidised the product by 50 per cent, allowing farmers to purchase each bag at ₦25,000.

The governor said the intervention was aimed at reducing the financial burden on farmers during the planting season and boosting agricultural productivity across the state.

To ensure transparency and accountability, Yusuf announced the constitution of a state fertiliser distribution committee headed by the Commissioner for Agriculture, alongside similar committees in all the 44 local government areas to supervise the exercise.

He also commended security agencies in the state for maintaining peace and providing the enabling environment for the successful implementation of government programmes, particularly in the agricultural sector.
