Gov. Yusuf Pledges to Sustain UK-Backed Education Reforms in Kano

Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining the education reforms introduced under the United Kingdom-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) programme, promising to consolidate the gains recorded over the past five years.

The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Dr Ali Abubakar Haruna Makoda, made the pledge at the PLANE Transition Workshop in Kano. He described education as the foundation of sustainable development and assured stakeholders that the state government would continue implementing policies aimed at improving learning outcomes across the state.

Yusuf said his administration would strengthen education planning, enhance teacher development, expand access to quality teaching and learning materials and ensure that every child in the state has access to quality education. He also pledged to institutionalise the reforms introduced under the programme to guarantee their long-term sustainability.

The governor commended the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the PLANE programme, Save the Children International and other development partners for supporting educational development in Kano. He noted that one of the programme’s major achievements was the generation of credible data on out-of-school children, which has enabled the government to implement targeted interventions.

He also lauded the programme’s contribution to improving foundational literacy and numeracy through teacher training and the provision of instructional materials to schools, reiterating the government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with local and international partners to improve educational outcomes.

As part of the workshop, the Commissioner for Education presented a letter of appreciation to the PLANE programme, received by the Education Manager of Save the Children International, Stephen Sawa, in recognition of the programme’s support for education development in Kano, particularly the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP). The event was attended by representatives of the British High Commission, UNICEF, development partners, civil society organisations and education stakeholders.
