Emir of Gumel Dies After 45 Years on Throne

The Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers, has died after 45 years on the throne.

The prominent traditional ruler reportedly died in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

Palace sources confirmed his death on Thursday, saying the Emir was expected to mark his 46th anniversary on the throne in November 2026.

Born into the Gumel royal family, the late Emir began his primary education at Gumel Primary School, where he studied from 1948 to 1953.

He subsequently attended Hadejia Middle School between 1953 and 1956 before proceeding to Kano High School at Rumfa College, where he completed his secondary education in 1961.

The late monarch later studied Public Administration at the Institute of Administration in Zaria, now affiliated with Ahmadu Bello University, earning a Diploma in 1963 and a Higher Diploma in the same field in 1970.

In pursuit of further education, he travelled to the United States, where he studied Political Science and International Relations at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, completing his studies in 1978.

Since ascending the throne of Gumel, the Emir was said to have worked to modernise the administration of the traditional institution while preserving the customs and traditions of the emirate.

His open-door policy also provided members of the public with greater access to the palace, a development aimed at strengthening the relationship between the traditional institution and the people.

The death of the monarch has continued to attract tributes, with retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, describing him as a father and mentor whose legacies would endure.

D-I-G Gumel said the late Emir’s contributions to the development of Gumel and his guidance to those around him would remain an enduring part of his legacy.

The late Emir’s death is expected to be widely mourned across Gumel Emirate and Jigawa State, particularly among members of the traditional institution, government officials and residents who had benefited from his long reign.

He is survived by his family and members of the Gumel Emirate, who are expected to announce further arrangements concerning his funeral rites in accordance with Islamic tradition.
