The Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara, Nura Umar Bungudu, has reportedly been abducted by suspected armed bandits alongside three other persons.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers stormed Bungudu town on Thursday night and proceeded to the chairman’s residence, where they allegedly abducted him, his wives, children and three other persons.
The source said two police officers and a local vigilante, popularly known as Askarawa, were killed during the attack, while another person sustained gunshot injuries and was receiving treatment.
The source said the chairman’s wives and children were later released following the intervention of security personnel, who reportedly engaged the attackers in a gun battle. However, the chairman and three other victims were allegedly taken away by the assailants.
The incident reportedly occurred less than 20 kilometres from Gusau, the state capital. As of the time of filing this report, neither the Zamfara State Police Command nor the state government had issued an official statement confirming or denying the alleged abduction.
Meanwhile, sources said troops and local vigilantes had been mobilised to rescue the abducted chairman and other victims.
