The Kano State Government has pledged to support the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in strengthening professionalism, ethical standards and capacity development among public relations practitioners in the state.

The Director-General, Media and Publicity to Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, disclosed this when members of the NIPR Kano State Chapter paid a courtesy visit to the Government House as part of activities to promote the World Public Relations Forum (WPRF) 2026.

Bature, who represented the governor, said the state government was ready to invest in the training and retraining of NIPR members to promote professionalism and adherence to ethical standards.

He urged the institute to submit a formal request for land allocation for the construction of its permanent secretariat in Kano.

He also assured the delegation of the government’s commitment to supporting the welfare and security of public relations practitioners, as well as their participation in professional activities.

Bature said Yusuf had confirmed Kano State’s full participation in the WPRF 2026, scheduled to hold in Abuja from Nov. 15 to Nov. 21.

He disclosed that the state government spent more than N200 million on various categories of media and public relations practitioners in 2025, while over N150 million had been spent in 2026 on welfare interventions.

According to him, the support covers mobility, working tools, accommodation and medical assistance, among other areas.

The director-general further said legitimate requests from NIPR, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Correspondents’ Chapel would be considered for onward approval by the governor.

He also announced plans for a Northwest Regional Media Security Summit to be hosted at the Kano Government House, with sponsorship from the state government.

Earlier, a former NIPR President, Prof. Ya’u Sule Ya’u, said the roadshow was organised to sensitise the public and mobilise practitioners ahead of the WPRF 2026.

Ya’u explained that the forum would bring together public relations practitioners from across the world to discuss emerging trends and developments in the profession.

He said the event would also provide an opportunity to review the internationally referenced definition of public relations adopted in Mexico City in 1978, in view of changes in the profession over the years.

In his remarks, the Kano State Chairman of NIPR, Aliyu Yusuf, thanked Gov. Yusuf for receiving the delegation and supporting the institute’s activities.
