Alkalanci, in collaboration with IMDIL, has organised a capacity-building workshop for female religious scholars and teachers in Kano to strengthen efforts against misinformation and disinformation.
Bama Victoria, Programme Manager of Alkalanci, said the workshop aimed to build the resilience of religious leaders and equip them with techniques to navigate the information space responsibly.
Victoria said the programme was necessary because the internet had made it easy for individuals to publish and circulate information, including false and misleading content.
She noted that misinformation and disinformation had, in some cases, triggered crises and loss of lives, stressing the need to involve religious leaders in educating their communities on responsible information sharing.
“We feel we should conduct this capacity-building training before the election period to promote peaceful elections,” she said.
Victoria added that trained religious leaders would help disseminate the message to their followers and communities, thereby contributing to efforts to curb the spread of false information.
In his remarks, Adam Auwal Mudi Yakasai, who represented the District Head of Rano, Dr Auwal Mudi Yakasai, said the training would go a long way in addressing the menace of misinformation and disinformation.
He said the Rano Emirate supported initiatives aimed at tackling the spread of false information and promoting peace and stability.
Similarly, Sheikh Ibrahim Abubakar Tofa, who represented the Chairman of Kano Ulama Council, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, expressed the council’s support for the initiative.
Tofa pledged that the council would help spread the message among religious leaders and the wider community to ensure the workshop achieved its objectives.
The workshop is part of efforts to strengthen community resilience against false information and promote peaceful participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
