President Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun’s Resignation, Appoints Tunji Disu as Acting IGP

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following the submission of a letter in which the outgoing police chief cited pressing family considerations.

The President received Egbetokun’s resignation earlier on Tuesday and expressed profound appreciation for his decades of distinguished service to the nation and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

In a statement issued by the Presidency, Tinubu commended the former IGP’s dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture during his tenure.

Egbetokun, who was appointed Inspector-General of Police in June 2023, was serving a statutory four-year term scheduled to conclude in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act. His appointment came at a critical period marked by complex security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across various parts of the country.

During his time in office, Egbetokun oversaw strategic policing reforms, intensified operations against criminal networks, and pursued initiatives aimed at improving inter-agency collaboration and community policing. The Presidency acknowledged his efforts to modernise operational frameworks and reinforce discipline within the Force.

While details of his resignation were not elaborated beyond “pressing family considerations,” sources within the Presidency described the decision as personal and voluntary.

Disu Takes Over in Acting Capacity
In response to the leadership vacuum, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

Disu, a seasoned officer with extensive operational and investigative experience, is expected to provide continuity and steady leadership at a time when the country faces evolving security threats. He has previously held key command positions within the Force and is widely regarded for his field experience and administrative competence.

The President expressed confidence that Disu’s operational depth and demonstrated leadership capacity would offer focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period.

In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council in the coming days to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. Following the Council’s deliberation, his nomination will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation, as required by law.
