Dropping Rurum for Deputy Governor: Gamble Gov Yusuf Cannot Afford – Analyst Warns

A political analyst, Dr. Kawu Sule, has cautioned that sidelining Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum in the selection of Kano State’s next deputy governor could prove a costly political miscalculation for Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf, amid growing agitation over zoning, equity and political balance.

In an opinion article, the analyst argued that Rurum’s exclusion from consideration risks alienating key political blocs, particularly in Kano South, where stakeholders have intensified calls for representation in the state’s top leadership hierarchy.

The warning comes at a time when the deputy governor’s seat has become a focal point of intense political negotiations following recent developments within the state’s political landscape.

Dr. Sule noted that Rurum, a former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and current member of the House of Representatives, commands significant grassroots support and political influence across the state.

He stressed that ignoring such a figure could weaken the administration’s political base and undermine efforts at inclusive governance.

The article also highlighted ongoing agitation by groups such as the Kano South Concerned Elders Forum, which has consistently advocated for Rurum’s emergence, citing the need to correct what they describe as decades of marginalisation of the zone in the state’s leadership structure.

The forum argued that Kano South, despite its size and political importance, has long been underrepresented in key executive positions.

According to the analyst, the contest for the deputy governorship has narrowed to a few key figures, including Rurum, Engr. Rabiu Suleiman Bichi and Murtala Sule Garo, all of whom were reportedly nominated by political stakeholders for the governor’s consideration.

However, he maintained that Rurum’s political reach and acceptability give him a strategic advantage that should not be overlooked.

Dr. Sule further argued that beyond individual credentials, the decision carries broader implications for political stability in Kano State.

He warned that a choice perceived as unjust or politically biased could deepen divisions within the ruling coalition and create openings for opposition forces ahead of future elections.

He concluded that Governor Yusuf must weigh not only loyalty and political alliances but also equity, regional balance and long-term governance considerations in making his decision, stressing that the deputy governorship choice remains a defining moment for the administration.
