The Kano State Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change has suspended the Manager of the Thomas and Ghari Regional Water Schemes following the vandalisation of facilities at the project site.
The Commissioner for the ministry, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, announced the suspension in a statement after an inspection visit to the water schemes.
He expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of facilities meant to provide water services to three local government areas.
Hashim said the inspection revealed that the schemes had remained non-functional for years, with almost all electrical wiring stripped from generators and pumps.
He added that a power project completed three months ago at the Thomas scheme, but yet to be commissioned, had already been looted by vandals.
The commissioner also disclosed that security personnel engaged to safeguard the facilities were found cultivating crops on the premises.
He described the situation as unacceptable and ordered the immediate suspension of the manager pending the outcome of an investigation, warning that anyone found criminally liable would face legal action.
