2027: Group says opposition permutations show lack of strong candidate

The Forum for Democratic Patriots (FDP) has described the ongoing debate over a possible opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential election as evidence that the major contenders lack the capacity to secure victory individually.

The group said the reported calls for Atiku Abubakar to step aside in favour of a joint opposition ticket, alongside suggestions that Peter Obi should become Atiku’s running mate, reflected uncertainty within the opposition camp.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, the FDP’s convener, Sani Ibrahim, said the disagreement over who should withdraw showed that the opposition had yet to settle on a candidate capable of winning nationwide support.

“Everyone, it seems, agrees that someone should step aside but they just can’t agree on who,” the group said.

The FDP urged Atiku, Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to withdraw from the 2027 contest, arguing that Nigeria needed political stability and continuity rather than another prolonged electoral battle.

It said Atiku’s previous presidential contests and experience as vice-president were recognised, but maintained that he should now take on the role of an elder statesman.

The group also questioned the viability of an Atiku-Obi ticket, describing it as a “political marriage of convenience” that would not necessarily translate into electoral success.

The FDP said President Bola Tinubu’s administration should be allowed to continue its economic reform programme, citing foreign exchange reforms, tax restructuring, the CNG initiative, student loans and social safety nets.

It called on the opposition figures to support Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda in the interest of national development.
