The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving public cemeteries across the state to enhance security, accessibility and environmental sanitation.
The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Alhaji Hamza Safiyanu Kachako, gave the assurance when he received a delegation of the Kano State Graveyard Attendants Association in his office.
Kachako acknowledged the concerns raised by the association and directed the relevant department to assess the affected cemeteries and identify areas requiring urgent intervention.
He assured the delegation that its requests would receive the necessary attention, stressing the importance of maintaining safe, accessible and dignified public facilities.
Earlier, the association’s Public Relations Officer I, Malam Mukhtar Abdurrahman, expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of some cemeteries, noting that they had become hideouts for criminals and other social vices.
He said the situation posed serious security challenges to surrounding communities and called for urgent government intervention.
Abdurrahman appealed for the construction of pedestrian walkways, improvement of water supply facilities and provision of adequate lighting to enhance security and accessibility within the cemeteries.
The visit underscored the importance of collaboration between government and relevant stakeholders in addressing environmental and security concerns across the state.
