The Northern Reform Organisation (NRO) has expressed support for the call by the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria for urgent national reflection and action to address the challenges confronting the country.
The organisation, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Gidado Mukhtar, commended the bishops for what it described as a courageous and patriotic assessment of the worsening conditions across various sectors, particularly the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
NRO said the intervention by the bishops demonstrated moral leadership and a sense of national responsibility, stressing that the concerns raised transcended partisan and sectional interests and focused on the welfare of Nigerians, national unity and stability.
The organisation said it associated itself with the bishops’ concerns over economic hardship, insecurity, governance deficits and declining public confidence in state institutions, noting that the challenges were realities experienced daily by millions of Nigerians.
It called on well-meaning Nigerians, civil society organisations, professional bodies and other stakeholders to support the call for urgent action, stressing that addressing the country’s challenges required collective responsibility, honesty, courage and constructive engagement.
NRO also urged the Federal Government to critically reflect on the issues raised by the Catholic Bishops and respond with sincerity, transparency and decisive policy action.
The organisation said Nigeria was at a critical point in its history and urged the government to regard the bishops’ intervention as a patriotic contribution to the national discourse rather than criticism for its own sake.
It expressed hope that the intervention would serve as a catalyst for meaningful reforms capable of restoring public trust, strengthening democratic governance, promoting equity and justice, and placing the country on the path to recovery, national renewal and shared prosperity.
