Al-Istiqama University confers posthumous honorary doctorate on late Dantata

Al-Istiqama University, Kano, has conferred a posthumous honorary doctorate degree on the late business magnate and philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, in recognition of his contributions to humanity and societal development.

The award was presented during the university’s convocation ceremony, where other distinguished Nigerians, including Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil and Alhaji Abdulmumini Maishanu, also received honorary doctorate degrees.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abdulhadi Sule-Kumurya, said the institution honoured Dantata in recognition of his outstanding contributions to humanity and the development of society.

The ceremony also featured the graduation of 1,104 students from the university.

The Visitor to the university, Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf, congratulated the graduands and honorary degree recipients, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the institution and advancing education in Kano State.

The late Dantata, who died in 2025, was widely recognised for his business activities, philanthropy and support for education. Ahmadu Bello University, for instance, recalled his contributions to educational projects and noted that it had previously conferred an honorary doctorate on him in 1990.

The National Universities Commission has clarified that honorary doctorates are honorary distinctions and should not be presented as equivalent to earned academic doctorate qualifications.
