The Kano State Police Command has invited Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Warkal for questioning over an alleged unlawful display of a firearm during a suspected political gathering.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement issued in Kano.
Kiyawa said the command discovered a video circulating on social media during routine cyber patrol, showing Warkal allegedly displaying a firearm suspected to be a pump-action rifle.
He said the alleged action, if established, could constitute a violation of the Firearms Act and potentially cause fear, intimidate members of the public and threaten public peace and security.
According to him, on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, Warkal was invited to the command headquarters in Bompai, Kano.
He said the politician was currently at the command’s State Intelligence Department (SID), where investigation into the matter was ongoing.
Kiyawa quoted the commissioner as warning that the command would not tolerate acts of lawlessness, thuggery or display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, irrespective of the status of those involved.
The commissioner also advised political actors, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct themselves peacefully and comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act, Firearms Act and other extant laws.
He urged all political stakeholders to ensure that their activities promoted peace, tolerance and respect for the rule of law.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that Kano remained peaceful before, during and after the political season.
