Eating beans may increase gas, but it is usually normal — Health experts

Beans, a protein- and fibre-rich food, can cause increased flatulence after consumption because of the way the body digests certain complex sugars contained in the food.

The complex sugars, known as oligosaccharides, including raffinose and stachyose, are not completely broken down in the stomach and small intestine.

According to a health report published by Newslog on Sept. 15, the undigested sugars move into the large intestine, where gut bacteria ferment them, producing gases such as hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide.

The report explained that the resulting flatulence is generally a normal digestive process and does not necessarily indicate ill health.
It added that beans are also rich in dietary fibre, which supports bowel health and may help regulate cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

However, it noted that excessive or painful gas could sometimes be associated with food intolerance or digestive conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The report suggested soaking beans for longer periods, rinsing canned beans and gradually increasing fibre intake as possible ways of reducing gas-related discomfort.

It advised people experiencing persistent or severe digestive symptoms to consult a qualified medical professional.
