The Kano State Government has approved the merger of the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change into a single ministry as part of efforts to enhance administrative efficiency and improve coordination of policies in the state.

The approval was granted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and conveyed in a circular issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Farouk Ibrahim, dated June 1, 2026.

According to the circular, the newly created ministry will be known as the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change. The government said the decision was aimed at optimizing resource utilization and strengthening the management of environmental and water-related issues across Kano State.

To ensure effective service delivery and maintain sectoral focus, the ministry will operate through two separate directorates — the Directorate of Water Resources and the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.

The circular stated that each directorate would be headed by a Permanent Secretary, with both officials reporting directly to the Commissioner overseeing the ministry.

It further directed all departments, agencies and units previously under the two ministries to realign their operations, reporting structures and official correspondences in line with the new arrangement.

The merger takes immediate effect, while relevant stakeholders have been urged to cooperate fully to ensure a smooth transition. The government also noted that additional guidelines on the operational framework of the new ministry would be communicated in due course.
