The Kano State Police Command has warned residents, particularly young people, against engaging in roller skating on highways, bridges, road construction sites and other restricted areas within the Kano metropolis, describing the practice as dangerous and life-threatening.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, gave the warning in a statement issued on Saturday in Kano by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.

Bakori said the command had observed with grave concern the increasing trend of roller skating on major roads and other restricted locations, noting that some juveniles had taken to holding onto moving vehicles for speed and excitement.

According to him, although roller skating is generally a recreational activity, carrying it out on busy highways poses serious risks to both skaters and other road users due to the high volume and speed of vehicular traffic.

The police commissioner explained that most highways and bridges under construction in the state lacked dedicated skating lanes and sidewalks, making the activity hazardous for skaters and motorists alike, while increasing the likelihood of accidents.

He also expressed concern over the growing practice of some young skaters latching onto moving vehicles for sport or pleasure, warning that such actions could lead to severe injuries, loss of life and possible criminal liability.

Bakori urged all persons engaging in roller skating on highways, expressways, bridges and construction sites to desist immediately, reiterating the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining public order across the state.
