The Police Command in Kano State says it has arrested four suspects and recovered three stolen vehicles during intelligence-led operations conducted between Oct. 8 and Oct. 9.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement issued in Kano.
He said the operations were carried out by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad and Ungogo Police Division as part of efforts to combat motor vehicle theft.
Kiyawa said one of the recovered vehicles was a 2010 ash-coloured Toyota Corolla entrusted to a suspect, Sale Usman, alias Dambu, by its owner, Aminu Yahaya, for sale on Sept. 22.
He said the vehicle was allegedly diverted without the owner’s consent and later recovered in the possession of a buyer in Katsina, who claimed to have purchased it for N7.5 million.
The police spokesman noted that operatives, with the aid of technical support, recovered a stolen white Toyota Hiace minibus with registration number NSR 261 XB at Mariri Magadawa in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
He said two suspects, Abubakar Umar, 23, of Nasarawa GRA, and Mustapha Zubairu Abdullahi, 25, of Tarauni Local Government Area, were arrested in connection with the theft.
Kiyawa further said a 40-year-old suspect, Abdullahi Adamu, from Potiskum, Yobe, was arrested by a surveillance team attached to Ungogo Police Division while allegedly arranging to have a Mitsubishi Canter truck repainted at Kadawa Quarters.
According to him, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect confessed to stealing the truck from Dan Baba Garage in Potiskum, Yobe.
He said the police had contacted the Yobe State Police Command to facilitate further investigation and reunite the vehicle with its rightful owner.
Kiyawa said all the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, while efforts were ongoing to arrest fleeing accomplices.
He quoted the Commissioner of Police in Kano, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, as commending the operatives for their professionalism, prompt response and use of technical intelligence.
The commissioner also urged vehicle owners to exercise caution when parking their vehicles, entrust their property to trusted persons and install additional security devices to prevent theft.
He called on residents to provide credible information to the police and report suspicious attempts to sell vehicles at unusually low prices.
The Command advised members of the public to report emergencies or suspicious activities through its hotlines
