Kano Moves to Update 1959 Forestry Law to Tackle Environmental Challenges

Admin 1 week ago

The Kano State Government has commenced a comprehensive review of its forestry law, originally enacted in 1959, in a bid to align it with modern environmental standards and global best practices.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Mustapha Mohammad, disclosed that the review process is currently underway, noting that the outdated law no longer adequately addresses contemporary environmental challenges.

He explained that the primary objective of the exercise is to strengthen environmental protection measures and ensure sustainable forest management across the state.

According to him, the revised legislation will reflect current global practices, particularly in safeguarding natural resources and combating deforestation.

He emphasized the importance of updating legal frameworks to meet evolving environmental realities.

Also speaking, the Director of Ecology and Forestry in the ministry, Mohammad Auwal, described the review as timely and necessary.

He stated that the new law would provide a stronger legal basis for sanctioning individuals involved in unauthorized tree felling, a practice he said has contributed significantly to environmental degradation.

Auwal further revealed that the initiative has received the full backing of the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, underscoring the state government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

In his remarks, a retired Director from the Ministry of Justice, Salisu Abdullahi Marmara, expressed optimism about the outcome of the review.

He noted that the involvement of seasoned experts in the process would ensure the development of a robust and effective legal framework.

The reviewed forestry law, once finalized, is expected to be presented before the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative consideration and approval.
