The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged its members to remain calm following the omission of its governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam-Gwarzo, from the final list of candidates released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The party’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Yusuf Fasaha, made the appeal in a statement made available to journalists in Kano.
Fasaha said the party had consulted INEC, which reportedly attributed the omission to a computer error and assured that it would be corrected.
“I want to assure you that as the PRO of the party, the problem is not from us.
“We have consulted INEC, and they told us that the problem was with the computer, and they will rectify it,” he said.
He urged party members and supporters to remain calm, expressing optimism that a revised list containing the candidate’s name would be released by Monday.
Fasaha said Abdussalam-Gwarzo had fulfilled all the requirements for the election within the stipulated period, adding that the party would continue consultations on the matter.
Similarly, Dr Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata, Caucus Secretary of NDC House of Representatives candidates in Kano Municipal Constituency, described the omission as an error by the commission.
Kofarmata said the candidate had completed his registration within the stipulated period and that his name had been uploaded to INEC’s portal.
He added that the party had received confirmation that efforts were underway to correct the omission.
Time Express observed that the list released by INEC contained 17 governorship candidates and their running mates from various political parties.
The list included Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with his deputy, Murtala Sule-Garo, as running mate.
Other political parties whose candidates appeared on the list included the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party (LP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP), among others .
