An All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant for the Gumel/Gagarawa/Maigatari/Sule Tankarkar Federal Constituency in Jigawa State, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, has expressed reservations over reports that a valid direct primary election was successfully conducted across the 42 wards of the constituency.
In a statement issued on May 16, 2026, the retired Deputy Inspector General of Police said claims that the exercise was duly carried out in line with established guidelines and democratic principles were misleading.
He maintained that the situation on ground did not reflect the standards expected of a credible direct primary election under the APC.
Gumel noted that the process had already attracted widespread criticism from party members and observers, with many describing it as lacking transparency, inclusiveness, and procedural credibility.
According to him, the conduct of the exercise fell short of the democratic integrity required for such internal party processes.
Despite his concerns, the aspirant reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC and commitment to its unity and stability. He stressed that such loyalty must be anchored on fairness, justice, and due process, as well as the protection of the party’s internal democratic system.
He called on his supporters across Gumel, Gagarawa, Maigatari, and Sule Tankarkar to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding, urging them not to engage in any actions that could disrupt the peace of the constituency.
Gumel further disclosed that a comprehensive report detailing observations and developments surrounding the primary election would be submitted to the party’s National Assembly Primary Election Committee and other relevant organs for review.
He expressed optimism that the party leadership would act in the interest of justice, unity, and democratic credibility.
