Kano Drug Abuse Taskforce: A New Frontline in the Fight Against Drug Abuse

Since its inauguration by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Kano State Multi-Agency Taskforce Committee on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, under the leadership of Barrister Muhyi Magaji Rimingado, has emerged as a major component of the state’s response to the growing challenge of drug abuse.

The committee was established to strengthen the fight against drug abuse through a coordinated approach involving enforcement, intelligence gathering, public awareness, rehabilitation and reintegration. Under Rimingado’s leadership, the taskforce has adopted what it describes as modern techniques and strategies designed to identify drug-related hotspots, disrupt illicit activities and provide interventions for people affected by substance abuse.

One of the notable areas of intervention has been intensified operations in identified drug-abuse flashpoints across Kano. The taskforce has worked with security agencies and other relevant institutions to conduct operations, arrest suspected offenders and address activities associated with the distribution and consumption of illicit substances. The approach has also placed emphasis on intelligence-led operations rather than relying solely on routine enforcement.

Beyond arrests and enforcement, the taskforce has increasingly presented drug abuse as a social problem requiring rehabilitation and community participation. Its programmes have included efforts to encourage affected persons and their families to seek rehabilitation, while attention is also being given to skills acquisition and reintegration as part of the process of helping recovering persons return to productive lives.

Another significant aspect of the committee’s work is its engagement with traditional, religious, community and security stakeholders. Such engagements are intended to build a wider network of support for the campaign and encourage communities to provide information that can assist authorities in tackling drug-related activities.

The committee has also intensified public advocacy, warning young people about the consequences of drug abuse and encouraging parents, community leaders and other stakeholders to become actively involved in prevention. The emphasis is that the fight cannot be won by government agencies alone, but requires collective responsibility.

Briefing the Kano State Executive Council on the committee’s activities, Rimingado said significant successes had been recorded since its inauguration. He attributed the progress to the adoption of modern techniques and coordinated strategies, while stressing that the committee would continue to strengthen its operations.

The Executive Council, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, expressed satisfaction with the progress presented by the committee and encouraged it to sustain and expand its interventions. The council’s position reflects the government’s continuing emphasis on confronting drug abuse as both a security and public-health challenge.

For Rimingado and his team, however, the achievements recorded so far represent only the beginning. The committee says it intends to deepen collaboration with relevant agencies, expand prevention and rehabilitation programmes and sustain enforcement against those involved in illicit drug activities.

As Kano continues to confront the complex consequences of substance abuse, the experience of the taskforce demonstrates the importance of combining enforcement with prevention, rehabilitation, public education and community participation. Its continuing challenge will be to translate the gains already recorded into sustainable reductions in drug abuse and stronger protection for young people across the state.
