Ulama Support Gives Fresh Impetus to Kano Drug Abuse Taskforce

The Kano State Multi-Agency Taskforce Committee on Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking has received a major boost in its campaign against drug abuse following a visit to prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Karibullah Nasiru Kabara, in Kano.

The Chairman of the committee, Barrister Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, led members of the taskforce to the residence of the Islamic scholar as part of efforts to seek the support and cooperation of the Ulama in tackling the growing challenge of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking in the state.

The visit underscored the committee’s recognition of the important role religious scholars can play in preventing drug abuse, particularly through preaching, counselling and public enlightenment. The taskforce believes that the involvement of the Ulama could help strengthen community awareness and encourage families and young people to reject substances that could destroy their future.

Receiving the delegation, Sheikh Karibullah Nasiru Kabara expressed his support for the initiative, assuring the committee that the Ulama were fully behind its efforts to address drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

“We are totally behind you,” the Sheikh said, while urging members of the public to support the taskforce in achieving its mandate.

He stressed the need for collective action in confronting the problem, noting that government agencies alone could not effectively address drug abuse without the cooperation of religious leaders, traditional institutions, parents, communities and other stakeholders.

The support from Sheikh Karibullah Nasiru Kabara is significant as the taskforce continues to mobilise stakeholders across Kano State in its campaign. The committee has consistently emphasised prevention, enforcement, rehabilitation and reintegration as important components of its strategy.

For the taskforce, the endorsement by the respected Islamic scholar provides an opportunity to deepen collaboration with the Ulama and use religious platforms to reach communities with messages on the dangers of drug abuse.

As Kano intensifies its efforts to protect young people from the consequences of substance abuse, the partnership between the taskforce and religious leaders is expected to strengthen public participation and reinforce the message that combating drug abuse requires the collective responsibility of the entire society.
